Life3A develops solutions that help achieve developer Lendlease create the most sustainable retirement community in Australia.
Project objective
The objective was to deliver a retirement community that is liveable, resilient, diverse and adaptable. It strives for a lower carbon and ecological footprint. The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) 6 Star Green Star Communities rating provided the sustainability benchmark. The GBCA’s principles for sustainable communities are to: enhance liveability, create opportunities for economic prosperity, foster environmental responsibility, embrace design excellence, demonstrate visionary leadership and strong governance.
Client challenge
With luxury independent living, lifestyle amenities, and a co-located residential age care facility, the development’s diverse usage requirements and the subtropical climate posed a challenge in meeting the GBCA’s robust, transparent and independent assessment process.
Life3A solution
Life3A contributed to the built environment design, through strategic positioning of the buildings to maximise cooling breezes and crossflow ventilation within the master plan. Strategies to shorten shade periods and allowing solar access provided optimal liveable environments. Liveability was also addressed through walkways connecting buildings and green spaces, promoting active living in the open community.
Exceptional outcome
Achieving the first 6 Star Green Star Communities rating for a retirement living community in Australia ensures the client maintains its status as a sustainability leader in the sector. It sets new benchmarks for retirement living projects. Bernborough Ascot residents will benefit from the sustainability measures, not only in terms of driving down energy and water bills, but also improved lifestyle and health outcomes.
