Best practice dementia-friendly design in special care unit expansion

Where Gold Coast, QLD, Australia
Value $5m
Client Galleon Gardens

Project objective

The addition of a special care unit was seamlessly integrated into the existing wing to provide additional care rooms in an environment where the residents are encouraged to engage in outdoor activities promoting wellness.

Client challenge

Integrating the new wing with minimal disruption and maintaining high-quality standards. In addition, the focus of the development was on design based best practice principles and emerging research for dementia-friendly living, enhancing the quality of care the client can provide.

Life3A solution

An analysis of the existing buildings and the immediate site surroundings informed the decision to spread 36 new rooms across both existing and new wings. The design takes full advantage of a beautiful site, surrounded by tall eucalypts and melaleuca trees, offering a tranquil and natural setting and at the same time taking maximum advantage of the views surrounding the site.

Exceptional outcome

The seamless integration with the existing site and facilities and the use of best practice in dementia-friendly design has helped create a sense of peace and familiarity for residents.
