Solution Specialist dementia care facility incorporating latest technologies & innovation

Life3A created a high end dementia care home incorporating latest technologies and innovation in care. Through Loveday’s passionate approach in all areas of research, evidence-based care and activities are used to improve the lives of those living with dementia.

Life3A provided inspirational design solutions against a complex set of site constraints and existing building restrictions to an inner-courtyard site. We designed dementia specific spaces that feel homely and do not look or feel institutional.

Highlights

  • To create a inspirational and homely arrival experience, by creating a pavilion and entrance experience for patients and visitors to the building.
  • The new Courtyard Garden Mews, helps Define this experience with a residential mews character.
  • Retention of the existing roof terraces, by creating a series of sensory garden terraces to intrigue and engage residents.
  • Retention of the existing light wells, to create focal points and private garden courtyards to complement the interior design concepts.

Project objective

Delivering 40 bedroom en-suited care suites, a communal lounge and interactive spaces, as well as treatment and support amenities. This is all purposely designed for the elderly suffering with dementia whilst allowing residents to feel independent, safe and secure in an inspirational environment.

Client challenge

The challenge was to create an elegant residence, ensuring that the clients innovative technologies and our ageing principles were seamlessly integrated and in consideration of the end user.

The site itself and the existing building envelope had its own challenges with being an inner courtyard location, without vehicular access and sensitivities to neighbouring buildings. Difficult access arrangements due to level differences and minimum available outdoor spaces had to be taken into consideration. Careful treatment was required to maximise natural light, outlook and general amenity and providing a landscape design to complement the location and support the end user.

Life3A solution

Despite the limitations of not altering the exterior of the building, the interior provides successful spaces, appropriate for their function and recognisable at a multi-sensory level. The new entrance pavilion is welcoming and opens up to the lounge and dining spaces and the outdoor areas. The care suites are private spaces that will be personalized to reflect the resident’s particular culture, preferences and needs. Adaptability, accessibility and safety are paramount to the design to create a barrier-free environment with exposure to natural light, essential for maintaining well-being.

Within the constraints of the existing site, we have created a safe place where residents can enjoy a dignified life in an environment that will encourage social interaction and peace of mind.

Exceptional outcome

The design and finish will be reflective of the best high end residences in London.

State of the art technology has been employed, with tablet interfaces, and supporting wearables such as alarm, fall monitoring and location pendants.

With the ability to personalise the suite entry and create a feature wall within the room, each resident can add their own touches and joyful memories to the interior design to provide ‘a home from home’.
